Course is completed over two years, unit's 1 and 2 in the first year and 3 and 4 in the second.
Unit 1 (G451): An introduction to Physical Education
Unit 2 (G452): Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education
Unit 3 (G453): Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education
Unit 4 (G454): The improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of practical activities in Physical Education

Assessment
Unit 1: Written paper is externally set and assessed. The question paper has 3 sections with 1 question in each section; the final question in each section is a longer answer.
Unit 2: Externally set, internally assessed and externally moderated. Candidates are assessed in 2 chosen activities from 2 different activity profiles and a response to a live performance.
Unit 3: Written paper is externally set and assessed. The question paper has 2 sections with which you answer 3 questions; the final question in each is synoptic.
Unit 4: Externally set, internally assessed and externally moderated. Candidates are assessed in 1 chosen activity and a response to a live performance.
All grade descriptors for the various sports are on the OCR website and students are encouraged to download the specific ones for their chosen sports.
Matriculation requirements
GCSE PE theory grade B
Exam dates
Practical grades obtained throughout the year and sent to the exam board by 31st March, practical moderation will take place after this date and before 15th May.
Written exams taken in the exam season (May/June), with re-sit opportunities available.

BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness)
The BTEC National Diploma in Sport (Development, Coaching and Fitness) is a 100% coursework qualification that is equivalent to 2 A-Levels and is highly regarded by further education colleges, universities and employers. Assessment is practically based and all tasks are work related with a view to build the confidence, competence and motivation of students in order to prepare them for higher education and/or future employment within the sport sector. The course will appeal to those who actively participate in sport and have an interest in the aspects surrounding and supporting performance in sport. Students may want to seek employment into P.E teaching, sports coaching, fitness instructing, leisure centre managing, sports science, sports psychology, sports nutrition or physiotherapy.

BACKGROUND INTO BTEC:
A BTEC National Certificate is directly equivalent to two A-Levels, and consequently it is highly regarded by universities, further education colleges and employers. They aim to build the confidence, competence and motivation of students in order to prepare them for higher education and/or future employment. |
SKILLS THAT WILL BE DEVELOPED:
Coach development is an important strand through the course and students will have the opportunity to develop those skills through teaching small groups in school and potentially work based experience programmes. Students have the opportunity to acquire nationally recognised coaching qualifications. A student will develop a high standard of skill in a range of relevant practical and theoretical areas. |

SYNOPSIS OF CONTENT:
This course will give students the opportunity to gain a BTEC National Certificate in Sport. Specifically in coaching, development and fitness. This is equivalent to two A - Levels and corresponding UCAS points. This popular course balances theory with practical application to provide the skills and knowledge required for a career in the sport industry. The course will appeal to those who actively participate in sport and have an interest in the aspects surrounding and supporting performance in sport. Learners may wish to extend their programme through the study of a related GCE, a complementary NVQ or another qualification. |
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
At least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above, at least one of which should be English, Mathematics, Science or PE or BTEC First at merit or distinction or Intermediate GNVQ at merit or distinction |

ASESSMENT:
Assessment within this subject is 100% coursework. They are of a vocational context such as information leaflets, log books, articles, press releases, presentations, surveys, questionnaires, reports and observations of practical tasks. Learners can revisit their work to achieve the grades they desire in order to increase their achievement. Assessment through coursework encourages students to work to their maximum ability throughout the duration of the course. Coursework enables students to work at their own pace rather than to time constraints of exams while pupils also learn to meet deadlines set. Additionally, continuous feedback from teachers helps students to monitor their own performance and provides them with a sense of ownership over their progress. |

All students will have the opportunity to develop the basic key skills of Communication, Application of Number and Information Technology. |

COURSE CONTENT:
The course is made up of 12 units, consisting of seven core units which all students must take, and a further five specialist units of your own choice. Core units (Compulsory): These units are fundamental to your programme of study. |
WORK/PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE:
Work experience and visits (including one overseas) are integral to the course. Practical study, as individuals and in teams, is also a key factor in students developing an understanding of this vocational area. |

ENTRY PROCESS:
All applicants will be invited to an interview with the tutor, allowing you to find out more and check that the course is the best option for you. Interviews normally take place between January and September of the year in which the course starts. |

CAREER OPTIONS: Sport contributes £8 billion to the UK economy per year, including 36,000 employers and 600,000 employees. However, employers suggest that there is a skills shortage in the sector. Therefore, knowledge and understanding of sports contexts could be invaluable to progress into a career in this area. This course could lead to career options such as PE Teacher, Sports Coach, Fitness Instructor, Sports Scientist, Sports Psychologist, Sports Nutritionist, Physiotherapist, Leisure Centre Manager or Youth Worker. |
